Mattias Roussel, the Lord of Rosemoor Dell and patriarch one of the most powerful noble families outside of Mezrani City, is a hard man to know. He has to be: to rule fairly and justly and withstand the onslaught of Imperial influence, he has developed a thick armor and difficult demeanor. Caidy struggles with her father every day--and struggles with the parts of his personality which she sees in herself.
Of all the characters, Mattias was one of the hardest for me to write, because he is such a challenging man. He's not particularly likable: he has strong, unapologetic opinions, and he's very used to being in charge and having the last say. Fleshing out his history really helped me uncover his motivations, and how all these complexities and contradictions can exist in one man. If you want more on his personality, check out this article, and keep reading below to learn about his past!
Margot Caron is the personal maid to Caidelene Roussel, and has been for over a year now. Though she is a servant, she treats Caidy like a little sister--an attitude which has earned her Caidy's respect and love. Coming from practical roots, Margot makes it her mission to help her noble charge remember the people she is responsible for, and not get too caught up in the glamor of wealth.
Margot's history is fun because, like Merric, she comes from a humble background. Margot is like you or me--someone who doesn't grow up with stupendous privilege, but someone who works hard and loves her job. If you want a sneak peak into her mind, make sure you read this article, which gives you hints about Margot's personality and motivations!
Lord Commissioner Rawley Hendrick is the highest ranking member of the Amaranth Khmal (or "Blades") in Rosemoor Dell. He oversees any and all Imperial intelligence work in the province, and keeps the Lord of Rosemoor appraised of potential threats to the safety and security of the population. Hendrick is well-respected in the Blades, but he is also considered "old school" - he has no problem coloring outside the law if it means getting the job done.
Hendrick's history is one of the most interesting in our cast of characters and full disclosure: I'm not going to share everything. Most of the characters in Summer Twilight don't know much about who he is and where he came from; you'll get some of the secrets, but more will be revealed later in the series! If you want even more, make sure you check out this article, all about Hendrick's personality and motivations.
Farah al-Kalim is the newest Ambassador from the Mezrani Empire to Rosemoor Dell. As a member of the Diplomatic Corps, she represents the interests of the Imperial Authority anywhere she goes, enforcing Imperial law, negotiating treaties and deals, and reporting back any findings of interest to Mezrani City.
In this blog post, I'm going to take you into Farah's history, so you can learn how she came to be who she is today. You'll discover how she grew up, and gain insight into her relationship with Alex, which predates Summer Twilight and is the cause of consternation for Caidy. If you want more, make sure you check out this article, all about Farah's personality and motivations.
Alex and Caidy get a lot of love on this site - for good reason, as the protagonists. However, Summer Twilight has a diverse cast of characters, all of whom have complex backstories and their own trials and tribulations to overcome. Over the next few months, I'm going to give you a lot of background and secrets about the major characters in my blog!
I've also written an article series which will give you a "profile" of each character, so you can learn more that way. The purpose of these blog posts? To share the hints of character history that otherwise will take books and books to all reveal. Keep reading to discover more about Merric Adley, Captain in the Rose Guard and the personal bodyguard to Caidy.
